Our Band
“The Band” had no name and consist of members playing music for themselves and others to enjoy.
Prior to 2005, music was provided by Alice Vanstan (organ) and Lindsay George (drums), it included the National Anthem, Club Song and Happy Birthday. These are still played at monthly meetings.
In 2005 the group increased to three with Neil Brogden (piano) and to four in 2011 when Alex Dawson (violin) was encouraged to join.
In 2012 Neil and Alex were playing at Brown Hill Seniors where Merv Romeo was the guest artist, a well-known, Ballarat ballad/country performer. On that day, Merv joined in and so became the fifth member of the group. When Lindsay (drums) moved to Bupa his replacement was Alan Trevenen. Alice then relocated to Horsham and Merv is unable to perform and covid has limited our opportunities.
Over the years the group performed at many venues:
- Senior Citizens Clubs
- Hospitals
- Retirement Villages
- and Social Events
Our aim was always to encourage others to participate – Betty sometimes accompanied by Margaret on piano, Ray, Phillip, Marie, duets by Bob and Faye and other artists. The group played sing-a-long songs and everyone had the words either as hard-copy or shown on over-heads.
They were good days – preparing programs, music sheets and practice at Alice/Keith’s home where the organ/piano were tuned in sync. Alice’s husband Keith, Neil’s wife Pamela and Alex’s wife Joan provided comments on our preparations and prepared refreshments during those years.
Time moves along and soon it will be up to other to fill the void. Our sincere thanks to SSCC Committee and Members for their support and allowing us to play on music days.
