Seniors Hall Demolished
I’m not an early-morning person. At all.
But these past few weeks, I’ve made a habit of wandering down to the Senior Citizens hall each morning before work to monitor the progress of the demolition project.
It’s going well. So much so that by next week, there will be no trace of the building that was, until this year, the home of the Sebastopol Senior Citizens Club, Sebastopol/Delacombe Girl Guides, Sebastopol Lions Club and other local community groups.
It’s been interesting to watch the scene unfold. It began firstly with the removal of the Sebastopol Childcare Centre. The west end of the fenced-off area is now just neatly-raked dirt. Local residents might remember that before the Child Care Centre was erected, a wonderful wooden playground occupied the spot, built by the Sebastopol Lions Club.
The crew then moved on to the Senior Citizens hall. I expected a swift and brutal demolition, assuming that the well-known brown-brick building for which our community raised funds back in the 1970s would be quickly reduced to rubble. Instead, I witnessed the gentle process used by Perry Demolition. Almost as if showing respect for a building so important to Sebastopol since 1979.
I look forward to monitoring the progress of the next project, the construction of a replacement community hub.
